The Rev. John J. Ryan, S.J., papers consist of correspondence received by Fr. Ryan, and manuscripts of poetry, short prose pieces, and novellas written by him. The two novellas are entitled 'The light of the home, lost and regained' and 'Father Gabriel, a story touching on the Civil War'. Also included are a few documents belonging to Fr. Ryan, including a signed Jesuit oath against Modernism.

John James Ryan was born in Ireland on July 31, 1843. He was brought to the United States as a child and entered the Society of Jesus in 1857. His earliest training was at the Frederick (Md.) Novitiate followed by studies in philosophy at Boston College and Georgetown University. After teaching for several years at the College of the Holy Cross and Loyola College, Baltimore, he went to Woodstock College in Maryland for theological studies. He was ordained in 1873.
